Our Favorite Tomato Varieties
Every year we plant a large variety of tomatoes in our garden and try to incorporate new ones each time. This year, we have quite a few favorites to share.
1. Brandywine
Known for its classic heirloom charm, Brandywine tomatoes are large, pinkish-red fruits with a sweet, rich, and slightly tangy flavor. They’re perfect for slicing and adding to sandwiches or salads. Brandywine plants tend to produce moderate yields but deliver exceptional taste that many home gardeners swear by.
Growing tips: Brandywine requires full sun and plenty of space, as the plants can grow quite large. They take longer to mature, usually around 80-90 days, so starting them indoors early is recommended.
2. Cherry Tomatoes (Sweet 100)
Sweet 100 cherry tomatoes are a favorite for their burst of intense sweetness and prolific production. These small, round tomatoes are excellent for snacking, salads, or roasting. Their vigour means you'll harvest a bounty throughout the growing season.
Growing tips: They thrive in containers or garden beds and need consistent watering. Because they are indeterminate plants, they will keep growing and producing until frost.
3. Cherokee Purple
Another cherished heirloom variety, Cherokee Purple tomatoes have a deep, dusky red to purple color and offer a complex, smoky-sweet flavor. These large, beefsteak-style tomatoes are excellent fresh or in dishes where a bold tomato flavor is desired.
Growing tips: Like Brandywine, Cherokee Purple plants are indeterminate and thrive with ample space and support. They do best with consistent watering to prevent cracking.
4. Vivacious Hybrid
Vivacious hybrid tomatoes are bursting with flavor, combining the best traits of heirloom and modern varieties. Known for their vibrant colors, robust taste, and excellent disease resistance, these tomatoes are perfect for fresh salads, sauces, or snacking right off the vine. Their vigorous growth and high yields make them a favorite for both home gardeners and commercial growers looking for reliability and exceptional taste. Whether you’re new to gardening or a seasoned pro, vivacious hybrid tomatoes promise a delicious and satisfying harvest every season.
